Policy · v1 draft

Terms of service

Last updated 11 May 2026. This is a first-pass draft and has not yet been reviewed by an Australian lawyer — final wording may change before general release.

1. The service

study-canvas is a web-based practice tool that lets you hand-write mathematics solutions and receive feedback from a large-language-model grader. At launch we cover the VCE Mathematical Methods curriculum; we expect to add further subjects over time.

These terms form a contract between you and study-canvas. By creating an account or using the service you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

2. Who can use study-canvas

  • You must be aged 16 or over to create an account at this time.
  • You must give us truthful information at signup, including your date of birth. Misstating your age to gain access is a breach of these terms.
  • If you are 16 or 17 you should read these terms and the Privacy policy with a parent or guardian before continuing.
  • One account per person. Account sharing is not permitted.

3. Your account

You are responsible for keeping your sign-in email secure. We sign you in using one-time codes, so anyone with access to your email can sign in as you. Tell us at support@studycanvas.app if you think your account has been compromised.

4. Free and Premium plans

  • The Free plan includes a capped number of graded attempts per day. Your handwritten image is graded but not retained.
  • The Premium plan removes the daily cap, retains your handwritten attempts for review, and includes higher-quality walkthrough feedback.
  • A 14-day Premium trial may be available to new accounts. It auto-reverts to Free at the end of the trial unless you start a paid subscription.

5. Payments, GST, and refunds

  • Premium prices are listed on the billing page. Prices are in Australian dollars and GST-inclusive.
  • Payments are processed by Stripe. Your subscription renews automatically each month or year (whichever cadence you chose) until you cancel.
  • You can cancel at any time from the Stripe customer portal. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period — you keep Premium access until then.
  • Cooling-off. Under the Australian Consumer Law you may cancel and request a refund within 14 days of your first paid period if you have not made substantive use of the Premium features. After that, refunds are at our discretion and are typically issued only where the service has failed materially.
  • If we change Premium pricing, we will give you at least 30 days’ notice before the change applies to your subscription.

6. Grading is best-effort, not authoritative

This section is important. study-canvas grades using a large language model. It is designed to help you practise; it is not a substitute for a teacher, a tutor, or an official assessment.

  • The grader can be wrong. It may mark a correct solution as incorrect, or (less often) mark an incorrect solution as correct.
  • The grader is not used for any VCAA assessment. It has no standing for School-Assessed Tasks, exams, or any other official mark.
  • Walkthroughs and hints are produced by the same model and can also be wrong. Always cross-check important results against your textbook, your teacher, or a canonical solution.

7. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use study-canvas to complete work that is meant to be your own — in particular, VCE School-Assessed Tasks or other assessed coursework.
  • Try to jailbreak the grader, extract its prompts, or trick it into producing content unrelated to the question.
  • Upload material you do not have the right to upload, or material that is unlawful, abusive, or harmful to other users.
  • Share your account, attempt to access another user’s account, or scrape the service.
  • Use the service to develop a competing product or model.

We may suspend or terminate accounts that breach these rules. Where the breach is minor we will normally warn you first.

8. Intellectual property

  • You retain ownership of the handwritten work you submit. You grant study-canvas a worldwide, royalty-free licence to process that work for the sole purpose of grading you, providing walkthrough feedback, maintaining the service, and (in de-identified, aggregated form) improving grading quality.
  • The questions, walkthroughs, hints, code, designs, and trade marks that make up study-canvas remain ours.
  • You may not redistribute study-canvas content outside the service without our written permission.

9. Suspension and termination

You can close your account at any time from Settings or by emailing us. We may suspend or close your account if you breach these terms, if we are required to by law, or if continuing to operate the service to you would be unsafe. We will give you reasonable notice unless doing so would itself cause harm.

10. Liability and your consumer rights

Nothing in these terms limits any guarantee or right you have under the Australian Consumer Law that cannot be excluded.

Subject to that, study-canvas is provided “as is”. Our total liability to you for any claim arising out of or in connection with the service is limited to the amount you have paid us in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim. We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss.

11. Governing law and disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia. If you have a dispute with us, please email support@studycanvas.app first so we can try to resolve it directly.

Small consumer disputes may be brought to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). Otherwise, the courts of Victoria have exclusive jurisdiction.

12. Changes

We may update these terms over time. Material changes will be flagged in-app and by email at least 14 days before they take effect. Continuing to use the service after that point means you accept the updated terms.
